Spyro the Dragon by DarkmaneTheWerewolf Spyro the Dragon by DarkmaneTheWerewolf
Been re-discovering the game recently, and was talking to someone about it for a bit too XD. I freaking loved the classic Spyro games to bits, got each one on launch day as a kid and i actually remember distinctly hearing two older boys going into the store as i left (I was still a kid at the time), one said to the other "Thats the game i really want to get" and they were considerably older, probably my current age or a bit younger XD buying a cutesey Dragon game. It was funny at the time because the older boys would usually be into the "Cool" games, or at least don't openly admit to liking anything but the "Cool" games.

Anyway, though i still got the originals, i've been unable to play them since i've stored my psx and ps2 away. Now however, they've all been released on psn, i bought all 3 and have really missed playing them XD I have to say, the skateboarding minigames in the third game is probably my favorite part aside from boss fights and chasing thieves =p.

(I still remembered the code to make Spyro change colours =p Pause and input ^ < v > ^ [] r1 r2 l1 l2 ^ > v < ^ then the button for the colour you want or ^ and v)

I believe the rights to Spyro actually belongs to Activision right now? But props to Insomniac for the original creation and design.

Wait, WHAT?!? Are you saying you don't have a PS3, but have a PSP instead? You didn't know that you can play PS1 disc games on the PS3?

I have a Ps3, but its a later model that isn't backwards compatable =( 2 USB, 80GB model.

Well, I don't have the earlier models to compare the weight. Its still a Phat PS3, not a slim or superslim, but it is a later version of the big PS3 that only has 2 USB ports and the HDD is 80GB (I can confirm its 80GB because i've taken it out and replaced it with a 320GB one =p), so its not backwards compatable.

I can actually play the original disks on my computer via ePSXe, but 2 and 3 have anti-piracy protection that acts up because I'm not playing on an actual PSX. I've extracted a subpanel ppf patch from the disk but Spyro 3 is still a bit buggy and can't be finished =(

I love this picture! <3

I enjoyed all the Spyro games, but the original and Spyro 2, Ripto's Rage have to be my favorites, especially as far as replayability goes. I loved the newer Dawn of the Dragon to bits but it's replay value fades over time. It was amazing the first play through though. c:

Indeed =p the original 3 spyro games (Especially the second and third) werefantastic games with so much replayability, even getting it off the Playstation Network again, i'm loving every second of it all over again.

The Legend of Spyro games, though i really enjoyed the story (And i really like Cynder) they wern't great in terms of gameplay compared to the first 3 and i think thats what makes its feel a bit tedious to play over again >< the first 3 has some nice, smooth controls and it was fun to just explore the home worlds on their own =p

Exactly :) They're all good, but they lost the thing good old games just had with their less complex and more free gameplay.

Indeed, we need more games like that nowadays - Simple yet fun! I don't care if its got the deepest, most complex, story ever written or HD 3D Hyper realistic movie like cutscenes, its a freaking videogame!! I want to play it! A good story and nice cutscenes can add to the immersion but i don't expect those to be the main focus where all i'm doing is moving my character from one place to another, I'll go watch a movie or read a book if i wanted those things. ><

They need to balance it. Some games do it beautifully, but if they don't balance it, I'd rather they keep it more simple and just give me wonderful gameplay. I'm more likely to stop playing if the mechanics are annoying than their story or graphics lacking a bit.

Me too. Having grown up with games my whole life, especially the snes and N64 era, blocky or pixelly graphics don't bother me, infact, the games i consider the best i've ever played are those with blocky graphics and simple stories because they were just super fun to play, I loved the sequels even if they were essentially the same thing and I still enjoy just playing them now.

Exactly :) One of my favorite games is Galaga, and I still love the old Asteroids and Mortal Kombat series that were on Arcade systems.

XD Metal Slug, Castlevania,  Gradius... And thats another thing! I really miss those really difficult games >< Its been a very long time since a game has actually beaten me DX (Gargoyle's quest and Demon's crest for one, Wonder boy 1 and 3 is another DX I still can't beat them as a grown up old fart). The closest was Demon's Souls which i actually gave up on at one point, but then i played Dark souls and managed that alright ish (Still kicked my butt really hard) and i was able to get back to Demon's Souls and finally finished it after that XD Really looking forward to Dark Souls 2.

I need more of these games! Games that actually require me to concentrate really really hard >< Games nowadays are too soft DX I just had a game's "Endless" mode end because i managed to max out my score and it couldn't get any more difficult DX and i'm losing my edge as a result too! Last time i played the original Mario land's hard mode, it was actually hard!! DX

The original Spyro trilogy was the best ^^ Riding skateboards and what-not. The challenges were damn annoying though (especially that ONE agent 9 mission...)

That someone seems to be familiar, can't remember who XD

Damn that code was cool XD, I forgot about it sometime and hey I found it again! XD

The mini games were always a main attraction for me XD

Couldn't play the originals anymore as my ps1 broke a few years ago. But I still play dotd on my cousin's ps3 :3

Awesome fan art!

Lol XD Who indeed =p

I inputted that code so many times, i knew the movements by heart XD I can't recite it off the top of my head, but hand me a playstation controller and it'll just flow through.

It was practically all mini-games and side quests XD Getting through a level was just a part of the game, you still needed to collect a certain number of dragon eggs/power cells/rescued dragons/gems too, and everything could be replayed without starting a new game, but not all had to be completed to finishe the game either (Unless you're a completionist like me DX).

If you got the originals, you can actually run the disks on your computer on an emulator called ePSXe. As long as your computer is decent and has a CD drive, ePSXe can emulate the game through the original CDS. Otherwise, get the games on PSN =p

XD

oooh i know what you mean, and dont get me started about those things, wait i actually do the same in mh, like when they ask me what timings they should look for, i can't answer. i just play XD

ooohh dont get me started with being a completionist, i do play beyond the main story, and look up for in-game challenges. in mh i still aim to complete all awards (the medals in the guild card), i only got two left to unlock, i'm pretty sure they are the ones where you need to get all largest gold crowns for all monsters and smallest gold crowns. damn i still yet to find a gold crown large devil jho. i am beginning to think if im over hunting them to extinction. lol 146th silver rath fetched me a gold crown XD

damn! i never thought of that! now that you've said it ima gonna try it out, *google searches ePSXe and installs* and after a few minutes. hell yeah! it works! i'm going to be busy. XD thanks!

Love this picture :'3 Took me back to the days where I'd put the game on purely to go skating and beat Hunter's score ^^ And hit those pesky sheep...

Well, the katakana used for the Japanese title of the first game looked like it was spelling out "Ripto" in Romaji. This was pure coincidence, but the devs liked the sound of it so much, they named the next villain Ripto, and the rest is history.
