Lor run-glide cycle by DarkmaneTheWerewolf Lor run-glide cycle by DarkmaneTheWerewolf
A character in Cornelius' story (Which i haven't forgotten about!) and brother of Prestor, but rather than having another set of legs, Lor's middle pair develop into Wings as he is a Flopside Lizard rather than Flipside like Prestor.

What better way to have a break from doing animated commission work than doing more animation =p

Lor and Prestor's designs have finally been completed but not properly shown here. Is not perfect, the head and tail jumps slightly, theres a kink in the left wing, etc, but I just wanted to show a little on how Lor moves about (And that i haven't entirely abandonned Cornelius' Story ><)

34 frames, 25fps, doubles.

I don't like to say because it's not the program that makes the animation. I draw it frame by frame and that is more important than how fancy the software is.

Lor is a character in one of my stories. I don't have a full ref for him yet but he is a Flopside lizard, a flipped version of his brother Prestor who is a Flipside lizard =p

This is just exported as an animated gif in whatever software I was using at the time. Photoshop, GIMP and Sai all do it as most other related software will. Otherwise, you can get video editing software to do it too.

As a working Freelance animator myself, I'm glad to see my work inspiring people like yourself. Please check out some of the video guides I have on Youtube (They are linked through various deviations in my tutorials and guides folder here: darkmanethewerewolf.deviantart… )

Everything there is based on what I learnt over the years and while studying at University so i hope they'll be helpful to you =)

FOUND THIS AGAIN. YUSSS :happybounce:

You have no idea how much this has inspired me, Darkmane :} I cannot really animate all that well, but every time I see a running dragon, I want the wings to do more than just float or hover above them. THis is the only one I've found so far that does what I think they should do XD

So, I wanted to leave a comment and say thank you :} This is epic and totally awesome and inspires me to try to animate, or at least draw what I see, now that i've got a visual.

You are very welcome =) I'm glad to see my work is inspiring people to do better and try animation.

I also have a number of animation guides in my gallery on the principles of animation too. They're all based on what I learnt while I was studying animation at University so they're worth a look =p

You dont need flash =p I made this entirely with GIMP which is readily available to download and completely free! There is no limit to doing animation, everything is available to you if you have the initiative to work with what you have or can easily get. I even started out with paper and a crappy old webcam taped to my desk XD

ahh... GIMP crashed my computer last time I tried it actually. I'm not good enough with computers to know why.

lol i never really tried the hand-drawn animation style, sadly. too intimidated with how long it would take LOL

Heh, animation by nature takes an exceptionally long time and requires a lot of patience, this for example took 2 days to make =p. If you're put off by how long hand drawn animation would take, then maybe its not for you. Programs like Flash won;t make it any different and are probably worse for beginners. If you want to do proper animations, stick with proper drawing software or hand drawn and composite the frames yourself (GIMP can export .gif files and I assume Photoshop can do the same because they're almost identical. Otherwise, there are other free programs like MonkeyJam).

Flash's way of working is to convert all your lines into its own style rather than letting you do your own thing. Anything you create in Flash is merely something that is "Made in Flash" and nothing more. You'll get much better drawings from using something like GIMP/Photoshop/Sai or drawing straight onto paper, and you'll get much nicer movements from animating them yourself, frame by frame.

Ohh... That I didn't know! I've never had Flash so never been able to 'play around' with it. From what I'd gathered, it helped more than a simple art program. I'll have to look into animation a bit more then. It is still something I'd love to do.

I used flash for a few jobs that required it but I used it as a drawing program and not as Flash. It does indeed have a lot of shortcuts to move things around for you, this is partly why it needs to convert all your drawings into its own vector like style, but the shortcuts are very uniform and calculated so you end up with something that looks horribly unnatural and messy (Also, Flash would never interpret my lines how I actually wanted them, I can draw a straight line and it'll think theres a curve, a bump and then taper the end). Imo, its a terrible program to start learning animation- you easily pick up bad habits from the shortcuts it offers and you never really learn animation, you just learn to use Flash. Its better to learn animation the old fashioned way, you'll at least know the basics then =p

Theres no secret shortcut, just lots of drawing practice. You must be able to draw well to even begin, then you just need a lot of patience to draw a few hundred thousand pictures of the subject moving wherever you want =p I just did this straightforward in about an entire day >< The blue for the wings was just so i could differentiate which limbs i was drawing.

I have some tutorials on Youtube on some of the principles of animation which might be worth a look =p They're linked in my gallery's guides and tutorials folder or just search for me on youtube (same username).
